Search Engines:

Google

Google is definitely the most important search engine that your site needs to obtain a top ranking in. Google also provides secondary results for Yahoo!. Google has become very popular and claims to have over 2 billion web pages in their index. Google has also proven to return accurate results for searches, which is also due to its popularity as a search engine. Google is famous for their Page Rank system that ranks how popular a page is to a certain keyword, the more popular pages receive better positions. These also check the on page factors such as titles and headings, etc. Google is the next popular search engine after Yahoo! and MSN, and these three engines combined will provide you with the vast majority of your search engine traffic. Google is one of the remaining search engines that do not charge to submit a site into their directory.

FAST (ALL THE WEB)

Fast provides results for All The Web and Lycos. Again these search engines are not likely to provide much traffic compared to Google, but they will still provide visitors to your site, so it is worth having your site in the index and positioned.

AltaVista

AltaVista is not as popular as it once was, however a good ranking will still provide a steady flow of traffic to your site. AltaVista uses its own index, although it is not as easy to get in without paying.

Inktomi

Inktomi is an important index to rank well in as it provides content to many other search engines such as HotBot, Iwon, AOL, and secondary results to MSN. Inktomi also relies heavily on link popularity and page content such as title and body text are very important. Inktomi charges to submit a site into their index, you can still submit for free through HotBot your site will incur a penalty.

TEOMA (ASK JEEVES)

Teoma was purchased by Ask Jeeves, and while it is a rather small search engine it does provide the primary results for Ask Jeeves. Teoma replaced Direct Hit.
